These were the second guards vans to carry the ZF code as the ZLP's were built as ZF's.
50 ZFs were built at Newport and Bendigo workshops from 1971 until 1973. In the 1979 recoding they became VVDY. From 1979 onwards at least 16 vans were modified with the addition of a passenger compartment to enable crews to travel. These vans had an extra window and one of the large sliding doors was replaced with a smaller door. Vans known to have been modified are: 2, 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 16, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27, 35, 39, 47, 50.
